About the distillery

Mortlach Distillery was founded in 1823 in Dufftown, Speyside, and holds the distinction of being the first legal distillery in the town. Often referred to as “The Beast of Dufftown,” Mortlach is renowned for its bold, meaty, and complex spirit—very different from the lighter and fruitier Speyside norm.

Now owned by Diageo, Mortlach employs a unique and complex distillation process known as “2.81 distillation”, involving six stills in a configuration unlike any other distillery. This method gives Mortlach its signature rich and full-bodied character.

For many years, most of Mortlach’s output went into premium blends like Johnnie Walker, but in recent years, Diageo has elevated Mortlach as a single malt brand with official bottlings that showcase its robust style.

The whisky often matures in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, resulting in rich layers of dried fruit, leather, spice, and a touch of sulfur. Independent bottlings are also popular among collectors for their raw, intense expressions.

Mortlach continues to be highly respected among connoisseurs for its bold profile and technical uniqueness.

Other Information

This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Mortlach single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 2014.

The cask was regauged in January 2025, summarizing the following:

- New bulk 245 liters | New strength 63.7% ABV | 156 liters of alcohol

This would currently yield approximately 347 x 70cl bottles of whisky.

IMPORTANT:

- Annual cask storage fee as well as any cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.

- Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Gallery. Funds will be held by Whisky Gallery until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.

- Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond. The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.
