In 2021, we first approached the renowned Japanese master sculptor Yoshimasa Tsuchiya. At that time, the creation of whisky art labels was still in its early stages. However, with great humility, Mr. Tsuchiya viewed this as another breakthrough—transforming whisky, a common element of daily life, into a work of art. This led to the inception of a brand-new project. Since 2007, Yoshimasa Tsuchiya has participated in many major art exhibitions and held numerous solo exhibitions. His sculptures are widely acclaimed, with each piece showcasing a remarkable blend of precision and creativity that leaves a lasting impression on viewers. You’ll be captivated by the expressions of the mythical beasts and animals he sculpts, their eyes seemingly speaking, making it impossible to look away.

Tasting Note

On the nose, this exceptional whisky is a lesson in instant seduction: notes suggestive of nocino, Seville orange marmalade and dried figs in the setting of a drawing room filled with the aromas of old books and newspapers and freshly waxed leather as well as the lingering residue of pipe tobacco and menthol cigarillos. There are also hints of lemon verbena, liquorice and Earl Grey cake, and after a while, notes of forest floor and porcini stock. The palate expands on this decadent scene with candied orange peel, orangettes, baklava and dark chocolate as well as pleasantly bitter notes reminiscent of slightly oversteeped Earl Grey tea, grapefruit albedo and kumquat liqueur. The finish is long but gentle, with fresh mint leaves, Bird’s Eye chili peppers, sudachi and Cointreau sorbet in a delicate equilibrium. Water brings out a floral touch on the nose and dials up the sweetness on the palate. You can count the number of bottlings from this distillery’s 1995 vintage on the fingers of both hands – a rare pleasure, therefore, in more than one sense. Stefan Van Eycken
