The Kyoto Ki Noh Bi ex-Karuizawa Cask Dry Gin 20th Edition is a unique and special release from the Kyoto Distillery. This edition is notable for being matured in a combination of ex-Karuizawa, ex-Chichibu, and Mizunara casks, marking a significant collaboration between Japanese whisky and gin. The gin is part of the Ki Noh Bi series, which is the first Japanese gin to collaborate with the traditional Noh Theatre, a classical Japanese performing art. The 20th edition was released in 2020 and features the Yase Otoko mask, a design created in the 17th century.

Tasting Note

Nose

The aroma is rich with citrus notes, particularly yuzu and lemon, complemented by a subtle smokiness from the cask aging. There are also hints of green tea and pine-forward juniper, providing a clean and somewhat classic gin scent.

Palate

On the palate, the gin opens with a burst of citrus flavours, including yuzu and freshly expressed orange oil. This is followed by a mid-palate transition to juniper with a pine note, and an earthy, herbal, camphoraceous impression. The cask aging adds layers of complexity, with notes of ginger, peppercorn, wormwood, and bitter black tea. The overall taste is balanced with a delicate interplay of yuzu and red shiso leaves, tied together by the juniper.

Finish

The finish is long and exceptionally dry, with lingering flavours of menthol, ginger, and a cool, radiating sensation reminiscent of eucalyptus. The influence of the Mizunara cask adds a touch of sandalwood and Kyara, contributing to a deep and lasting aftertaste.
