Connoisseurs Choice Heritage Collection
Volume: 700ml x 5 bottle
The pinnacle of luxury for any true whisky-lover, the Connoisseurs Choice Heritage Collection Volume One by Gordon & MacPhail is in a league of its own. Featuring 5 x 70cl bottles of some of their most carefully matured drams, this release showcases the breadth and depth of G&M’s expertise and strong industry links.
First up is the 1971 Dallas Dhu Single Malt. Matured in a refill American Hogshead, this little number still has plenty of kick for a 50 year old dram. Bottled at 43.7% abv, the nose is alight with lemon zest, red apple, and orange peel, all of which melt into warm vanilla and brown sugar notes. The palate is richer with poached pear, spicier with cracked bad pepper, and more complex with herbal notes being introduced. The finish leaves you with a puff of toasted almond air that is both comforting and satisfying.
Next is the 1976 Benromach Single Malt. Bottled at a smooth 43.8% abv, this 48 year old liquid spent its time slowly developing in a first fill sherry hogshead, giving it a rich and sweet profile. The nose is all vanilla fudge spiced with cinnamon, and a nice beeswax honey notes. The palate is slightly spicier with ginger, cracked pepper, and coco powder. The finish is medium bodied with slight hints of orchard fruits.
Third is a 1979 distillation from the Glenlochy Distillery. A slightly higher abv than the Dallas Dhu or the Benromach, this one sits at 53.6% abv. Matured for 43 years in a refill American hogshead, it’s a gorgeous golden dram that’s full of flavour. The nose is full of wax fruit, citrus and biscuit-y malt. The palate is smooth and creamy ginger chocolate, lime and exotic fruits. The finish lingers with aniseed and menthol.
The fourth bottling in the collection is the 1980 Port Ellen. The highest abv of the collection, this one is bottled at a punchy 57.6% abv. Matured in a refill American hogshead, this 45 year old dram is a whirlwind of tastes you simply have to try for yourself! The nose is crystallised violets, tangerines, butterscotch, and soft smoke. The palate is mature oak lightened by tropical fruits and spiced with black pepper. The finish is full of coconut and Brazil nuts, which rounds it all off nicely.
Finally we have the 1991 release from the Rosebank Distillery. Sitting at 53.1% abv, the liquid was matured within a first fill bourbon barrel for 34 years. A sweet and rich dram that’s full of syrup that will appeal to all, the nose has notes of vanilla tart, honeysuckle, shortbread, and syrupy pears. The palate, is zesty and tart, alleviating the syrup-y sweetness of the nose with lime, green apple, melon, and flambeed banana.
