Cheval des Andes

A celebrated collaboration between Château Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de Los Andes resulted in Cheval des Andes in 1999. Inspired by the original Malbec vines transported from Bordeaux to Argentina before the phylloxera crisis, CEO Pierre Lurton sought to create a Bordeaux-style wine using phylloxera-free Andean Malbec vines.

Terrazas de Los Andes, established in 1898 and refurbished by Moët Hennessy in 1996, was the perfect partner to showcase the Andes terroir. Cheval des Andes sources grapes from two high-altitude vineyards: Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo and La Consulta in the Uco Valley, each contributing unique characteristics to the Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.

Las Compuertas, meaning “the floodgates,” refers to the traditional Inca irrigation method that channels snowmelt from the Andes to the vines. A modern drip irrigation system was introduced in 2018, while snowmelt is still utilized and stored in reservoirs on the estate.
