The Ardbeg Heavy Vapours Committee Release 2023 is a unique and experimental whisky from Ardbeg, crafted under the direction of Dr. Bill Lumsden. This release is notable for being distilled without the usual copper purifier, which is typically used to balance the flavors in Ardbeg whiskies. The absence of the purifier results in a deeper and more complex smoke profile, showcasing untamed darker flavors.

Tasting Note

Nose

The aroma is classic Ardbeg with notes of tar, ointments, ash, camphor, and halogenated phenols. There are also hints of smoked citrus, predominantly lime, along with soft orchard fruits and light melon rind, rounded off by subtle bourbon cask influences.

Palate

The palate reflects the nose with flavors of citrus, ash, tar, embrocations, lanolin, disinfectants, and smoke. There is a presence of fruits and malt with a touch of vanilla and a twist of black pepper, leading to a delicious finish.

Finish

The finish is slightly tart, with oak, less smoke than on the nose, and notes of grapefruit, lemon, and green tart apple. It is described as being very oily and creamy, with a hint of bitterness and ash.
