Akkeshi Kanro Peated Single Malt Whisky 2020 / 17th Season

The Akkeshi Distillery, established in 2016 by the Tokyo-based trading company Kenten Jitsugyo, is a compact facility situated on Hokkaido's northern island, an area renowned for its high-quality dairy products. Occupying just 2,960 square feet, the distillery is set in a coastal environment reminiscent of Scotland's Islay region, known for its peat usage. The distillery features two stills and six wash-backs, with the whisky maturation process utilising a diverse array of cask types.

The distillery has launched a series of whiskies themed around the 24 Solar Terms of Japan, each release aiming to showcase the influence of local climate, wildlife, and agriculture on the whisky.

One such release is Kanro (meaning "cold dew"), which is crafted using peated barley and aged in a mix of ex-bourbon, wine, mizunara (Japanese oak), and sherry casks

Tasting Note

Nose

The aroma opens with a pronounced maritime peat, complemented by sea spray and kelp. As it develops, notes of lemon rind, strawberries, and subtly smoked pineapple appear, enhanced by hints of fragrant vanilla.

Palate

The palate is light-bodied, starting with a refined peat smoke that transitions to reveal layers of black pepper, dark chocolate, burnt malt, salted caramel, smoked meat, and strawberry jam.

Finish

The finish is long and lingering, reminiscent of a seaside barbecue. It features flavours of salted caramel and a sweet oaky undertone, providing a well-balanced close.
